H. Relton McCarroll, Jr., MD

Dr. H. Relton McCarroll is a nationally recognized and highly regarded hand surgeon with subspecialty expertise in pediatric upper extremity conditions and treatments. Dr. McCarroll joined the San Francisco Shoulder, Elbow & Hand Clinic in 1974. He is a Clinical Professor in the department of Orthopaedic Surgery at University of California, San Francisco Medical Center and has been an attending surgeon at the Shriners Hospital for Children, Northern California for nearly forty years. He is an associate editor for the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery and Journal of Hand Surgery, the two leading peer-reviewed journals in the field; and he also serves as co-director for the San Francisco Shoulder, Elbow & Hand Clinic Fellowship.

Dr. McCarroll completed his undergraduate education at Princeton University and received his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, NY. He completed his orthopaedic surgery training at the Campbell Clinic in Memphis, TN, which was followed by a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedics at Shriner’s Hospital for Children, St. Louis, and a fellowship in hand surgery with Dr. Daniel C. Riordan in New Orleans, LA.

Dr. McCarroll is a Board-certified Orthopaedic Surgeon with a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Surgery of the Hand. He is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. Outside of hand surgery, Dr. McCarroll enjoys adventure travel, gardening, astronomy, and playing with his granddaughter.
